(Stress may delay or totally inhibit coloration of foliage.)

Flowers: More than 1 inch (2.5 centimeters) long; with long threadlike pink stamens whitish toward base; crowded in long - stalked ball - like clusters 1 1/2 - 2 inch (4 - 5 centimeters) wide; grouped at ends of twigs; throughout summer.
Fruit: 5 - 8 inch (13 - 29 centimeters) long; flat pointed oblong pod; yellow - brown; maturing in summer, remaining closed; several beanlike flattened shiny brown seeds.

Light: Best in full sun; tolerates partial shade.
Moisture: Drought tolerant.
Soil: Thrives in a wide range of soil conditions, including alkaline soils.
Hardiness: USDA Zones 5 - 9. Withstands total neglect, as evidenced by its naturalization throughout the Southeastern U.S. from Washington D.C. to Florida.
Propagation: Seed, cuttings. Best results are with seeds directly sown into proper medium.
Discussion: The hardiest tree of its genus, the Black Silktree has an unusually long flowering period. Often called Nigra Mimosa-tree because the flowers are similar to those of the related herbaceous sensitive - plants (genus Mimosa). Silktree leaflets fold up at night; those of sensitive - plants fold up when touched. The Black Mimosa has stunningly beautiful leaves that accent the pink flowers to give a spectacular color combination. This sub - species is not as invasive as the regular Mimosa, and will not run wild as its cousin does. A very simple tree to work with, and one that will bring years of beauty and conversation to any landscape.
