Apache Pine Tree Seeds
Pinus engelmannii
Mexico Pine, Arizona Longleaf Pine, New Mexico Pine, Arizona Longleaf Pine, Pino Real

Description: Medium-sized tree with straight axis, open, rounded crown of few, large, spreading branches, 1 row added a year, and very long needles.
Height: 50-70' (15-21m).
Diameter: 2' (0.6m).
Growth: Apache pine seedlings tolerate significantly lower light than other pines.  This improves growth by a factor of 5 over other pines and makes a good choice for understory growth and regeneration.  Apache pine seedlings produce a relatively deep taproot and little top-growth during the first year of growth.  In the subsequent years, the top growth will surpass the root system growth.  A large enough container or planting location should be planned.
Needles: Evergreen; 3 in bundle (sometimes 4-5); crowded at end of very stout twigs; 8-12" (20-30 cm) long. Stout, spreading widely or drooping, dull green.
Bark: dark brown or blackish-gray; rough, thick, deeply furrowed into scaly ridges.
Cones: 4-5 1/2" (10-14 cm) long; egg-shaped or conical, almost stalkless, shiny light brown; opening and shedding at maturity, leaving a few cone-scales on twig; cone-scales 4-sided, thick, raised, with prominent keel and stout, short spine straight or curved backward.
Habitat: Rocky ridges and slopes of mountains; with Arizona Pine and Chihuahua Pine.  Native to mountains of south New Mexico and Arizona into Mexico.  Apache pine grows in climates that range from semiarid with bimodal precipitation to temperate-subhumid with most precipitation falling in all seasons.  Apache pine occurs on soils of varying depths and textures.  Soils can be 4 to 6 inches (10-15cm) deep with textures ranging from sandy to clayey sand with gravel.
Range: SE. Arizona and extreme SW. New Mexico; also N. Mexico; at 5000-8200' (1524-2499m).
Discussion: This Mexican pine extends northward to the Chiricahua Mountains and a few other ranges near the border. As the name implies, it grows in Apache Indian country. The seedlings pass through a grasslike stage with a short stem and very long needles to 15" (38 cm), as does Longleaf Pine (Pinus palustris Mill.) in the Southeast.  Tree related to and looks like a long-needled Ponderosa pine.
