Buds ovoid or ovoid-conical, partially hidden by the leaves, chocolate brown with white resin, 10-14 mm. in diameter. Leaves spreading outwards and upwards, with a distinct V-like parting above, sreading horizontally below, flattened on both faces, shiny dark green above, bluish-white below, 1-3 cm. long by 2-2.5 mm. wide; stomata very scarce above, in 6-8 lines below; cross-section avicular, base twisted, apex obtuse or bifid. Male strobili ovoid, yellowish-green, stamen dark purple, 1.4 cm. long by 7 mm. wide. Female cone cylindrical, apex rounded, resinous, dark violet then brown, 7-10 cm. long by 3-4 cm. wide; scales slightly pubescent, denticulate; bracts hidden, about 1/2 height of the scale. Seeds grayish, to 1.8 cm. long.
USDA Zones : 3b – 9b
Mature Height : 75' to 110'
Foliage : Green to dark green
Environment : Prefers partial shade or partial sun to full sun; soil should be wet
Flowering : Insignificant.
Fruit : Light brown cones; 4" long; cylindrical in shape; hidden bracts.
Discussion : A native species also found in S. China and S.E.Asia. The tree is of medium size with alternate large heart shaped leaves with 2 lobes and veins (9-11) radiating from the base of the leaf. The margin is entire and the surfaces smooth and hairless. Size ranges from 8 - 15 cm in diameter, petiole to 4 cm long.
Germination : Prefers a good moist but not water-logged soil. Grows well in heavy clay soils. Very shade tolerant, especially when young, but growth is slower in dense shade. Intolerant of atmospheric pollution. This species is the most tolerant of the genus to atmospheric pollution. Prefers slightly acid conditions down to a pH of about 5. Prefers growing on a north-facing slope. This species thrives in Britain, succeeding in the drier east of the country though growing better in the moister west and at its best in the Perthshire valleys of Scotland. Growth is fairly good, averaging around 30 cm per year for at least the first 100 years. Increase in girth is also reasonable, 1.2 meters in 36 years has been recorded. Trees should be planted into their permanent positions when they are quite small, between 30 and 90 cm in height. Larger trees will check badly and hardly put on any growth for several years. This also badly affects root development and wind resistance. The flowers are produced in axils of the previous year's shoots. Plants are strongly outbreeding, self-fertilized seed usually grows poorly. They hybridize freely with other members of this genus.
Habitat : Cool wet mountainsides. In mountain forests at elevations of 1000 - 1800 meters, generally growing in the intermediate zone between A. firma and A. Veitchi[
Culture : Full sun in moist well drained soils. Young plants show good shade tolerance.
Landscape Use : Specimen plant.
Foliage : Needles are dense on the stem and arranged to produce a "v" shaped notch running the length of the underside of the stem. 3/4 - 1 1/4" long and obtuse or shallowly notched at the apex.
Buds : Small, oval, resinous.
Bark : Young twigs deeply furrowed.
Fruit : Cones 3 - 4" long and colored purple. Mature cones are brown.
Propagation : Seed.
Pests : None serious.
