King Boris Fir Tree Seeds
Abies borisii-regis

Bulgarian Fir, Macedonian Fir, Ela, Tsar Boris've Ela

Description : The only fir native to the Balkan Peninsula, with narrow, pointed, spire like crown of spreading branches and aromatic foliage. Rugged and broadly conic. It is a large evergreen coniferous tree growing to 40–50 m (exceptionally 60 m) tall and with a trunk diameter of up to 1.5 m. The leaves are needle-like, flattened, 1.8–3.5 cm long and 2 mm wide by 0.5 mm thick, glossy dark green above, and with two blue-white bands of stomata below. The tip of the leaf is variable, usually pointed, but sometimes slightly notched at the tip, particularly on slow-growing shoots on older trees. The cones are 10–21 cm long and 4 cm broad, with about 150–200 scales, each scale with an exserted bract and two winged seeds; they disintegrate when mature to release the seeds
USDA Zones : Zones 2b – 7b.
Elevation : 5700 feet
Height : 40-60' ft, with specimens to 85’
Width : 20 – 30 feet
Diameter: 1-1/2' – 2 1/2’
Growth Rate: Medium to rapid.
Trunk : Long clear bole surmounted by a pyramidal crown.
Bark : Light brown, thin, smooth, with many resin blisters, becoming scaly.
Branches : Diverging from trunk at right angles, short, stiff; twigs mostly opposite, darker brown abaxially, light brown adaxially, pubescence tan. Buds small, spherical, brown, globose, 6-9 mm diameter, with violet wax; basal scales short, broad, triangular, densely pubescent, usually not resinous, margins entire, apex sharp-pointed.
Origin : Bulgaria, N Greece, Albania, and the former Yugoslavia, at elevations of 700 to at least 1700 m in the Pirin Mountains of SW Bulgaria, and 1800 m in Greece
Leaves: Needles Acute, occasionally with rounded or notched apex, 2-3 cm long, 2-3 mm broad, densely arranged, pectinate below the shoot, across the shoot above or (on heavily shaded shoots) also pectinate above as in A. alba; either without stomata or with a small patch of stomata near the tip on the upper surface, and with 2 white stomata bands on the lower surface.
Cones Very similar to A. alba but often longer, and to A. cephalonica; cylindrical to narrow conic, 11-21 cm long, 3-4 cm broad, green tinged pink or violet before maturity.

Discussion : Named of king Boris of Bulgaria. Abies borisii-regis, first described in 1925 by Johannes Mattfeld (1895-1951), is commonly called the King Boris fir, Bulgarian fir or Macedonian fir, also as 'Българска ела' in the Bulgarian language and 'makedón jegenyefenyő' in Hungarian.
